In the past 50 years, gay cinema has gone from body-building flicks to full mainstream integration. Many of the trailblazers are interviewed here including the always entertaining John Waters who still hopes that young gay filmmakers will surprise him (though he doesn't seem that hopeful). After all, now that the barriers are down and the New Queer Cinema is struggling to find new ways to express itself, gay themes may prove to be just as banal as those other victims of censorship - sex, violence and drugs. Still, this is a valuable and entertaining insight into the political and social issues that motivated gay filmmakers and should appeal to a wider than expected audience.
