SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY

(G, 83 mins) Hopscotch

Frank Gehry is one of the world's pre-eminent architects, the gifted creator of some of the world's great public buildings, many of them showcased in this feature doco. Filmmaker, friend and admirer Sydney Pollack intimately captures Gehry's creative process, from freehand sketch to finished product, a journey that involves risk-taking, playful experimentation and the intuition of an artist who knows when he has achieved something unique and beautiful. As you'd expect, Gehry does have his detractors, but their criticisms seem academic and petty when faced with the sculptural splendour of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, a masterpiece that stands alongside the Sydney Opera House as a shining example of what's possible, but seldom achieved.
