DVD & VIDEO REVIEW: Disco Pigs, Hopscotch, 94 mins, M drama, 2001 ***

Irish actor Cillian Murphy has been seen playing villains in Hollywood (Red Eye, Batman Begins) and as a survivor of the zombie apocalypse in Britain in 28 Days. But one of his earliest and most memorable performances was in Disco Pigs. A boy and a girl born at exactly the same moment in a Dublin hospital declare themselves soul mates and create an isolated world of childish pranks, delinquency and extreme devotion. When they're forcibly separated, it's not immediately clear what the cost will be - just that it will be devastating and involve violence. Director Kristen Sheridan's first feature is a strange, claustrophobic exploration of obsession. The young performers (Murphy and Elaine Cassidy) are strong but overwhelmed by unpredictable stylistic flourishes.DVD extras include: trailer.
